Khanewal- the host of 2nd largest railwahy station of Pakistan

This past Saturday got chance to know a bit about this beautiful city ofPakistanwhile watching a TV program. That show increased my information aboutKhanewal but right now when I am writing this a good amount of data has been gone out of the box which people call as brain. Therefore I got some help from internet to write this , so if there is any thing which you must have already seen some where else on the internet than its not my fault and the whole credit of this work goes to all those who virtually helped me in writing this.

Khanewal lies in the southern Punjab of Pakistan, and is known for having the second largest train station in Pakistan. The history and mystery behind this name says that it is named after the earliest settlers here who belonged to the clan known as ‘Daha’(jatt clan) and used the word ‘khan’ in their names. That is why the city came to be known as ‘khan-e-wal’ (that belongs to khan). Gujjar, Bandesha(jatt),jatt, Daha(jatt clan), Kamboh, Noon(jatt) and Sial clans are regarded as the initial settlers and founders of Khanewal.

The head of a rich history of the city can be found back to the early 1900s. Historically Khanewal is an old city having its earliest foundations laid by the British Empire owing to its importance as a railway junction. The city was a junction of the Wazirabad-Khanewal railway line and provided a connection to the city of Karachi via Multan. Its straight roads show that it is a well planned town by the British people. In 1985 Khanewal was declared to be district.

This city is one of the places which have some impact on the economy of the country, as Khanewal is famous for its cotton growing industry. Basically Khanewal is anagricultural city and is located in Pakistan's'Cotton belt'. It is known to produce the finest cotton in the World. However over the last 40 to 50 years industry has also been established in and around the city. Sir William Robertsestablished cotton trading and ginning installations in the area known as Brooke Bond which is now called Unilever. The people of Khanewal are mostly devoted to agricultural activities which are the main source of income for the people of the district.

Other industries in Khanewal includechemical production and oil extraction. If I consider the information which is given on internet right than, this has added to Khanewal's economy, growth and prosperity. There is a story famous behind this land that at one time it was a baron land but after the arrival of canal and water in this area it became populated and become a cotton growing area.

While I was searching for places to see in this city I got to know about few places, such as, one of the most famous landmarks in Khanewal is the Jangle Wali Kothi, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1913 by a Railway Engineer posted to Khanewal Railway Junction during the colonial period. Another place which is regarded as the oldest in suburbs of Khanewal is Kothi of Amir Baksh Khan Bhutta. The Khanewal junction is also a landmark as some parts of it have remained unchanged for over 130 years. Khanewal also has some other colonial landmarks dating back from the early 20th century, all private properties, but truly historic. A few of these properties were built and used by Sir William Roberts who is considered along with several others as one of the founding fathers of Khanewal and the famous farms outside Khanewal.

Barfi (a kind of sweet) is one of the most famous thing of this city. The BARFI which is found in this cithy is said to be the one of a kind and one can say gift of this city, another interesting fact for this city is that bananas and oranges are offered to sale in terms of kilos in this city rather than dozons as it is the practice in Lahore and northterrn part of Punjab.

Masood Anwar is a former Pakistani cricketer who played in one Test in 1990, and Rana Shabbir Ahmad (the almost 7 feet tall pace bowler); belong to this city.

That’s what I could find out and remember about this city and I would like to know more as it is one of my favorite activity so if any one knows more about this city please share the information.
