Urea up again by Rs30/50-kg sack

KARACHI (Azhar Ali Khan): Urea manufacturers have raised the draft prices of their products by Rs30 per 50-kg sack, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Fertilizer dealers say the ex-factory price of urea has been raised to Rs755 from Rs725 per bag.

The manufacturers have passed on the effect of recent gas price hike to the farmers by increasing their products’ prices, they said.

“Despite the fact they (manufacturers) are enjoying subsidy on gas the price has been raised,” said an office bearer of Kisan Board Pakistan - a farmers’ representative body - terming the hike completely unjustified.

Another farmers’ representative body has strongly condemned the price hike, saying the move would hit the agriculture yield badly.

“This recent increase in urea prices amid black-marketing of fertilizer would definitely add miseries to the farmers,” said Rao Afsar Ali Khan, President Agri Forum of Southern Punjab.

“The farmers are all-set to sow wheat, sugarcane, corn and vegetables in the days to come and the demand of fertilizer will be on rise,” he observed.

The farmers’ associations have demanded the government of checking and stemming rising fertilizer prices and safeguarding the interests of poor farmers.
